Xpu-Ha Beach|One of Top Beach Sites of the Riviera Maya

December 5, 2017 Beaches, Travel Guides

Xpu-Ha Beach (pronounced X- pū’– ha) is one of the hidden gems. The Mexican Riviera Maya is well-known for its long stretches of soft, white sandy beaches, warm sunny days which run in the mid-80 degrees F (approximately 30 C), and amazing snorkeling and scuba diving sites. Some of these beaches are well-known and easy to find. Others are not.

How to get to Hpu-Xa Beach

Just a short drive south of Playa del Carmen, Mexico is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Riviera Maya area, Xpu-Ha. This beach is easy to miss though.

Off of Federal Highway 307, a strip of freeway that connects Cancun to Tulum, there is only a few nondescript signs to warn me that I’m nearing its entrance.

Is there any Fees to Enter on Beach

The simple dirt road leading back to the beach is nearly overgrown with jungle vegetation. Two staff members at the road’s entrance collect the 50 pesos per person entrance fee are all the announcement Xpu-Ha gets.

But it deserves so much more!

After finding a spot for my car in a bare-bones parking lot, I wander through the local restaurant and walk out onto a stretch of sand.

I am nearly blinded by the intensity of the sun as it bounces off the beach’s startling whiteness. The soft sand teases my feet.

A day at the beach to me means sunbathing and reading my favorite book with a few minutes of swimming thrown in.

 Xpu-Ha offers a lot more!

What to eat at Xpu-Ha Beach | Eatables and Drinks at Xpu-Ha Beach

Two beach clubs, La Playa Xpu-ha Beach Club and KSM Beach Club pepper the area. I love La Playa’s Xpu-Ha Beach Club’s margaritas and fried calamari.

You must also try the shrimp ceviche! I adore KSM Beach Club’s comfy sunbeds. Both restaurants are a great place to grab a bite to eat or drink.

Food and drinks are just the appetizers to what is available at Xpu-Ha

Scuba Diving and Snorkeling-

One of the things that make the Riviera Maya extra special is that it’s home to the world’s second longest barrier reef also called the Great Mayan Reef.

Xpu-Ha Beach

This natural geological wonder sits a few hundred meters off the coastline and is populated with beautiful ocean flora and colorful sea life.

Scuba diving and snorkeling are particularly great at Xpu-Ha since the barrier reef draws closer to the shoreline along this stretch of sand. Snorkeling has become one of my new favorite pastimes.

Boat and water sports rental businesses offer scuba diving packages as well as snorkeling, kiteboarding, kayaks, tubing and paddle-boarding equipment rented by the hour. Jet-ski rentals along with boat tours and parasailing excursions are also available.

What about the land sport?

ATV off-road driving is offered and can be arranged as part of a tour package. Excursions can be scheduled at Xel-Há.

Horseback riding tours can be arranged at the nearby Bonanza Ranch and Zip-lining at Xplore.

Can I walk my dog at Xpu-Ha Beach

One thing I can’t do at Xpu-Ha is to take my dog a stroll. Pets are not allowed in the area since it’s a health hazard to the public and to the protected tortoise habitat.

What if I want to stay in the area?

Lately, I have been considering finding a place to stay near Xpu-Ha. I have discovered there are a wide range of choices.

Local lodging prices average $40 (US) to over $300 (US), depending on the property’s amenities and location in regards to the ocean.

I discovered I could rent a tent at the Serenity Eco Luxury Tented Camp or decide to be pampered at the adult-only resort of Catalonia Royal Tulum.

Nearby hotels include the Bel Air Collection Xpu Ha Riviera Maya, Hotel Esencia, Glamping Xpu Ha, and Al Cielo.

It’s not hard to see why Xpu-Ha has become my favorite beach. It’s gently sloping shoreline makes it a great place for young families, yet its wide variety of activities options makes it a popular place for the younger adult crowd.

Yet despite these benefits, it is rarely crowded, even on weekends, making it the perfect beach to visit any day of the week.
